APPENDIX: COMPRESSING LARGE VIDEO FILES
NOTE: These instructions are also available via the Help button on Connect.
If a student has a video larger than 150 MB, s/he may want to consider compressing it to a smaller size.  Theoretically, Connect Public Speaking will accept videos up to 500 MB, but most people’s internet connections are not suitable to uploading files that are so large.  Compression is actually quite simple, and will make the whole uploading process easier for many students.  To get started, students will need to download free software from the internet and install it on their computers.  Detailed instructions for Windows and Macintosh follow:
Windows Users
  1. Download and Install Any Video Converter. (http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/)
  2. Open Any Video Converter and click “Add Video” in the top left corner of the window.
  1. Select the file you want to convert from the “Open” window, and then click Open.
  1. Select “Flash Video Movie (*.flv)” from the Profile drop-down located at the top right corner of the window.
  1. Click the “Convert” button.
  1. Once the conversion has completed, click “No Thanks!” on the pop-up that appears.
  1. Right-click on the file in the queue (shown highlighted) and then click “Open Destination File Location” located at the bottom of the contextual menu.
  1. A window will appear and you should see your converted file. Upload this file to Connect. Note: by default, all of your converted files are stored on your hard drive under: Documents -> Any Video Converter -> FLV

Macintosh Users
  1. Download and Install Any Video Converter. (http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/mac_video_converter_freeware/)

  1. Open Any Video Converter and drag and drop your video file to the “Drag & Drop Files Here” area.

  1. Select “Flash Video Movie (*.flv)” from the profile drop-down located on the middle left hand side.

  1. Be sure to set an Output Filename and Output Directory. Output Directory is where the converted file will be saved. We recommend you save your file on your desktop.
  1. Click the “Encode” button.

  1. Any Video Converter will convert your video to a flv file format. Once this conversion is complete, upload the flv file to Connect.
